Fashion jewellery with gold-tone or silver-tone plating, stones and beads is made for special occasions, and a few simple habits help it look good for longer. These tips apply to most earrings, necklaces and tikka. Always read any care note on the product page, as it is specific to that piece.
Put it on last, take it off first
Perfume, hairspray, body lotion and make-up can dull the finish and leave residue on stones. Get dressed, do your hair and make-up, and add your jewellery at the end. When you get home, remove it before you change.
Keep it away from water and moisture
Take jewellery off before showering, swimming, washing up or exercising. Water and sweat can affect plating, loosen settings and damage threads on beaded pieces.
Clean it gently
- Wipe the piece with a soft, dry cloth after wearing it.
- For marks, use a slightly damp soft cloth, then dry it straight away.
- Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cloths and ultrasonic cleaners, which can strip plating or loosen stones.
Store each piece separately
Pieces that touch each other scratch and tangle. Store each earring pair or tikka in its own soft pouch or in a lined box with compartments. Lay tikka chains flat so they do not kink, and keep jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and damp bathrooms.
Handle beads and chains with care
Do not pull on chains, and fasten hooks gently. If you wear a tikka with a heavy pendant, pin the hook firmly so the weight does not drag on a single point.
Travelling with jewellery
Wrap each piece in tissue or a pouch and place it in a small box so that it cannot be crushed. Carry valuable or sentimental pieces in your hand luggage, not in a suitcase.
